Hangar 24 PugaFest celebrates Pugachev’s Cobra 2017 release

(Redlands, CA) – Hangar 24’s 2017 version of Pugachev’s Cobra has arrived and early tastings of our premier Barrel Roll offering are showing it to be as rich and decadent as ever. Come celebrate the release on Nov. 11 as our day-long PugaFest celebration takes place at the Redlands Taproom. PugaFest is free of charge and will take place from 1-10 p.m. on Nov. 11.

There will be 14 different versions of Pugachev’s Cobra on hand for this one day only. Varieties include aged version of Pugachev’s Cobra releases from previous years, as well as unique variants that only will be available at the event. Bottles of 2017 Pugachev’s Cobra will also go on sale, just in time for your Thanksgiving celebration later this month, to give away as an ideal Christmas gift, or just to have on hand aging in your basement. Pugachev’s Cobra can also be enjoyed now as it has already aged eight months in bourbon barrels.

Pugachev’s Cobra is a Russian Imperial Stout, jet black with notes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee and the perfect complement of bourbon. Aromas are of chocolate, vanilla, oak, bourbon, licorice and dark fruits. The 2017 version clocks in at 15 percent ABV and the 750 mL corked-bottle format makes it perfect for sharing with friends or family.

Be one of the first to try it at PugaFest, a celebration that will include music from bands like Orange County’s Poor Man’s Change, and local favorite Zentonic. There will be food from Tom’s Smokin’ Hot BBQ, and coffee from Augie’s Coffee Roasters in Redlands.

Note: The Redlands Taproom will be closed from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Nov. 11 for a private event.

Anchor Christmas Ale returns for 43rd holiday season

(San Francisco, CA) – Anchor Brewing Company announces the release of its 2017 Anchor Christmas Ale. A smooth and creamy winter warmer with rich flavors of cacao, toffee and roasted nuts, and subtle hints of honey and herbal spice, this year’s brew marks the 43rd annual release of this Anchor tradition.

In 1975 Anchor released the first holiday beer in America since Prohibition. Every year, Anchor creates a new, secret recipe with a completely unique label for their Christmas Ale, but the intent with each brew remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. With a heavily guarded, secret recipe, Christmas Ale (6.7% ABV) is sold only from early November to mid-January. This highly anticipated seasonal delight is complex and full in flavor, with a velvety texture and an alluring aroma of coffee and roasted wood.

“This year’s Christmas Ale has a strong malt profile that is enhanced with wintry spices,” said Anchor Brewmaster Scott Ungermann. “The beer pours a deep, dark, mahogany brown with a creamy, tan head. It has flavors of creamy bittersweet chocolate, coffee, roasted malts and toasted nuts, with a rich, smooth, velvety mouthfeel. This is the third year in a row that we peeled back the layers of spices, taking some ingredients out and making those remaining stand out even more. In the meantime, we added more specialty malts, some that we’re using for the first time. The combination of malts, spices, and hops add layers of complexity to the beer and bring this year’s ale to a new level.”

Along with an evolving recipe, Christmas Ale portrays a new label every year. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons, appears born anew. This year’s tree is the Santa Lucia fir. Extremely rare, it is native and limited to California’s Santa Lucia Range along the central coast of California. The tree on this year’s label was hand-drawn by Bay Area artist James Stitt, who has been creating Anchor’s Christmas Ale labels since 1975.

Anchor Christmas Ale is perfect for cozy nights by the fire, and it pairs well with holiday fare, whether it is a roasted turkey dinner, sweet potato pie, or roasted chestnuts. A beloved tradition for many Anchor fans is to collect multiple years of Christmas Ale. The beer’s wintry spiced flavors evolve over time, making vertical tastings an interesting and tasty holiday activity. Christmas Ale should be stored in a dark and cool place for the best results.

Ska Mod Project #3, Sour Apple Gose, releasing in cans, draft on November 3rd

(Durango, CO) — Expanding their experimental beer offering out of the Mod Project, Ska Brewing is excited to release the Sour Apple Gose. The scent of sweet apple blossoms give way to a honey and lemony tartness from the citra hops and souring, boasting a 5.1% ABV.

Sour Apple Gose will be available on draft and in 12 oz cans. It hits shelves this Friday, Nov. 3 widely across all of Ska’s markets of distribution.

“Sour Apple Gose is my new favorite beer for the season,” said Kristen Muraro, director of sales and marketing at Ska. “It tastes like you’re sipping on a crisp apple juice with a bright tartness that’s refreshing, not drying.”

Following Pink Vapor Stew and Tart Mexican Logger, the Sour Apple Gose is the third brew to be released from the Mod Project at Ska. Brewery Ommegang releases limited edition Smoked Porter to pair with the flavors of fall

(Cooperstown, NY) – As cooler weather settles in on the northeast, Brewery Ommegang is pleased to introduce their latest limited edition brew: Ommegang Smoked Porter. This nod to a traditional English beer is brewed with subtle additions of smoked malt and a touch of Saaz hops to add additional depth and character to an otherwise traditional English brew. While the style is a departure from Ommegang’s traditional Belgian-style beers, the characteristic aromas of chocolate malt along with caramelized sugar are reminiscent of many things Belgian, and of all things good. Smoked Porter is available now in limited quantities in four-packs and on draft while supplies last.

Smoked Porter is brewed with a carefully crafted blend of Pilsner, Special B, Munich 20, Cara-20, Midnight Wheat, chocolate malt, and smoked malt. Balanced hopping is achieved with Saaz, while fermentation with American ale yeast ensures the malt remains in the spotlight.

This 7.6% ABV beer pours a deep dark brown – almost black – with a thick tan head. Aromas of cocoa, burnt sugar, and roasted malt give way to subtle hints of smoke. Constellation Brands acquires minority stake in cannabis-provider, Canopy Growth Corp.

The investment and relationship will lend insights on the emerging cannabis market and evolving consumer trends

(Victor, NY) – Constellation Brands (NYSE:STZ) (NYSE:STZ.B), a leading beverage alcohol company, today announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire a minority stake in Ontario, Canada-based Canopy Growth Corporation, a well-respected public company and leading provider of medicinal cannabis products.

This investment and relationship is consistent with Constellation Brands’ long-term strategy to identify, meet and stay ahead of evolving consumer trends and market dynamics, while maintaining focus on its core total beverage alcohol business. Constellation has no plans to sell any cannabis products in the U.S. or any other market unless or until it is legally permissible to do so at all government levels.

Firestone Walker XXI Anniversary Ale to be released this Saturday, final blend unveiled

(Paso Robles, CA) – In winery circles, they often say “it takes a lot of beer to make great wine”—but the reverse is true when it comes to Firestone Walker’s annual Anniversary Ale.

Indeed, the latest Anniversary Ale—dubbed XXI, signifying the Firestone Walker’s 21st year on California’s Central Coast—was once again created with guiding input from friendly local winemakers.

The result is an inspired blend of five distinct beers aged in spirits barrels: Velvet Merkin (oatmeal stout, 42%), Parabola (Russian imperial oatmeal stout, 18%), Stickee Monkee (Central Coast quad, 17%), Bravo (imperial brown ale, 14%) and Helldorado (blonde barleywine, 9%).

XXI will be released to all Firestone Walker markets for a limited time starting next week.

An Annual Rite

The Anniversary Ale blending session has become an annual late-summer rite at the brewery, and the 2017 session took place on August 22 with 27 winemakers in attendance.

“We’ve been doing this for 12 years now,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “Winemakers are practicing experts in the art of blending—I can’t think of a better way to create something synergistic from such a wide range of barrel-aged beers.”

As always, the winemakers broke into teams, and a spirited competition ensued to create the winning blend, which was voted on after a blind tasting by the entire group.

This time, the bragging rights and the coveted “cardboard crown” went to Jordan Fiorentini and Kyle Gingras of Epoch Estate Wines along with Anthony Yount of Denner Vineyards, whose three-person team conceived the blend that became XXI.

Bring On The Merkin

XXI represents the first time that Velvet Merkin has set the pace for the Anniversary Ale blend.

“There’s a soft, sexy, chocolatey character to XXI that reflects the predominance of Velvet Merkin in the final blend,” said Eric Ponce, Firestone Walker’s barrel program production manager.

Another twist is the inclusion of Helldorado aged in premium Jamaican rum barrels.

“The rum Helldorado imparts notes of island spice and molasses,” Ponce said. “It adds a subtle exotic touch to the beer.”

Fittingly, the label design of XXI echoes the distinct curved roofline of Firestone Walker’s new brewhouse extension that was completed last summer—the biggest milestone in the brewery’s 21st year.

“The XXI blending session was the very best yet, and the result is absolutely gorgeous,” Brynildson said. “I’m so proud of this beer, and I’m so proud of the people who helped us make it.”

“XXI is a magical blend of five components. Chocolatey, mild Velvet Merkin takes the lead setting the stage full of lush malt and barrel-driven texture, yet tempered alcohol strength. The rest of the components fall perfectly in line, backing Velvet Merkin up with luscious caramel complexity and a creamy malt symphony. The final component adds a new twist – the rum barrel-soaked and lean Helldorado makes its Anniversary debut, bringing a fresh splash of island spice to a ridiculously balanced barrel-aged brew. This is one of those times that the whole is truly more than the sum of its parts. This beer is unfiltered and unfined, so there will be a small amount of sediment in the bottom of the bottle. XXI is best enjoyed poured carefully into a half-filled brandy snifter or wine glass. Allow it to warm to 55F to fully enjoy the pleasing and complex aromas.”

Harpoon Brewery acquires Clown Shoes Beer

(Boston, MA) – Harpoon Brewery and Clown Shoes Beer announced within the past week that the former has acquired the latter.

Yes, Clown Shoes has been acquired by Harpoon. No, we are not going to lose our identity and no, we are not “selling out”. Harpoon is an independent, employee owned craft brewery. All Clown Shoes Employees are moving over to Harpoon. All of us will become employee owners. For this partnership to work, everyone needs for us to continue to be Clown Shoes. We will still produce innovative, high quality beers with signature graphic marketing. We will, in fact, create small batch, state specific, and barrel aged beers at an accelerated rate in 2018.

Harpoon announced it became an employee-owned company in July of 2014.

Harpoon ranks 18th among all U.S. craft breweries in production, per Brewers Association data. The association’s marquee publication, The New Brewer, shows the company sold 198,300 barrels last year, its first time below 200,000 barrels since 2012. Clown Shoes produced between 12,000-13,000 barrels in both 2015 and 2016.

Indeed Rum King (Rum Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout) to be released on October 16th
